God’s Design for Marriage-They Shall Become One Flesh – Lesson 22 2025

Have you wondered why God made Eve out of a rib from Adam’s body? All of the birds, land animals and Adam, himself, were made out of the ground. But, not Eve. Not woman. Eve was made from flesh; from the body of Adam.

18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. Genesis 2:18 KJV

Then the RIB which the Lord God had taken from man HE MADE INTO A WOMAN, and He brought her to the man.
23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, Because SHE WAS TAKEN OUT OF MAN.
24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and THEY SHALL BE ONE FLESH. Genesis 2:22-24 KJV
In these verses God is describing His design for marriage. It is intended to be a sacred and pure relationship between a man and a woman where, in a very “literal sense” the woman, once again, becomes part of the flesh (the body) of the man. The two “literally” in God’s sight are joined together as one flesh. There is no longer two, but one flesh. This is how very sacred God’s design for marriage is. God’s design and God’s ways are, by far, always the BEST Ways for us, His Creation.
Jesus confirms this sacred, pure relationship.
4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
6 WHEREFORE THEY ARE NO MORE TWAIN, BUT ONE FLESH. WHAT THEREFORE GOD HATH JOINED TOGETHER, LET NOT MAN PUT ASUNDER. Matthew 19:4-6 KJV
Also: Mark 10:6-9 KJV- 6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. 7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; 8 And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. 9 What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
The man is to be joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh. THEY ARE NO LONGER TWO BUT ONE FLESH.
This is a very strong statement made by Jesus, the Lord over all of Creation: “THEREFORE WHAT GOD HAS JOINED TOGETHER, LET NOT MAN SEPARATE.”
Worth repeating: “THEREFORE WHAT GOD HAS JOINED TOGETHER, LET NOT MAN SEPARATE.”
An even deeper significance: Believers in Jesus Christ are members of The Church. We are joined to Jesus: members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. Marriage was designed to reflect the relationship between Jesus and The Church.
28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. 29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: 30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. Ephesians 5: 28-31 KJV
God’s purpose for mankind:
28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. Genesis 1:28 KJV
In Chapter 5 of Genesis, God provides a genealogy of Adam. God considered Adam and Eve to be one flesh. Adam is considered the family name. I believe this is the reason why original sin is charged to Adam. All of us have descended from Adam and are part of Adam’s family.
This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; 2 Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created. Genesis 5:1-2 KJV
Next week, we will begin looking at Chapter 3 of Genesis and the fall of mankind allowing Satan and sin entrance into God’s newly created world. We will look at how sin has corrupted marriage and perverted the role of intercourse in God’s purpose for the procreation of mankind (Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth).
