The Generations of “Adam” to Noah – Genesis Chapter 5 part 2 – Lesson 36 2025

Beginning with Enoch
21 And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah: 22 And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: 23 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: 24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him. Genesis 5:21-24 KJV

Enoch was one of two men who “walked with God” according to Scripture. The other was Noah (Genesis 6:9). We are told that Enoch “walked with God three hundred years” (Genesis 5:22). He was the first of two men who “God took” (translated) without experiencing physical death. Elijah was the other (2 Kings 2:11)

Enoch was the seventh generation from Adam in the bloodline leading to Jesus. Of all the generations before Enoch we read, “And he died;” but with Enoch it was changed, we read, “And he was not, for God took him” (Genesis 5:24). Enoch was justified by faith; he lived by faith (Hebrews 10:38)

Enoch Pleased God

Hebrews 11:5-6 KJV
5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

According to Jude 14-16. Enoch prophesied that the Lord would come and execute judgment on the ungodly.
14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, 15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.16 These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men’s persons in admiration because of advantage.

Enoch was the father of the oldest man who ever lived, Methuselah, who lived 969 years (Genesis 5:21).

Genesis 5:25-27 KJV
25 And Methuselah lived an hundred eighty and seven years, and begat Lamech: 26 And Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and daughters: 27 And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died.

The earliest patriarchs listed in the Bible’s genealogies lived very long lives. Methuselah holds the title of oldest-known man at 969 years old. It was in the year that Methuselah died that the Worldwide Flood came. (Year 1656)

After the Flood, we see ages declining. For example, Noah lived to be 950 years old, Shem to 600, Shelah to 433, and Abraham to 175.

Lamech, Father of Noah.

Genesis 5:28-31 KJV 28 And Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son: 29 And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed. 30 And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters: 31 And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years: and he died.

When Lamech was 182 years old, he fathered Noah, the name sounds like the Hebrew word for “comfort.” Lamech said, “This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed.” Lamech looked forward to the day when God’s curse on the ground would end. Lamech’s son, Noah was known as a righteous man in a world filled with great sin and perversion (Genesis 6:90).

Noah and his family were saved from the worldwide flood God sent to judge the earth. Thus, the line of promise was able to continue. Thousands of years later, Jesus Christ was born into the line of Seth through Lamech (Luke 3:37). Lamech’s godly hope that the curse would end was realized in Jesus, whose death and resurrection ended the reign of sin and death.

I find it fascinating that Lamech died at the age of 777, the number for Jesus, perfection.

According to the age numbers given in this chapter, Adam and Seth are both still alive when Lamech, Noah’s father, is born. Methuselah, who dies in the same year as the flood, lived more than 200 years before Adam passed away. See chart.

Genesis 5:32 KJV 32 And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Next week we begin lessons concerning Noah, God’s judgment of mankind and the worldwide flood.
