Garden of Eden and Satan’s Ultimate Defeat – Lesson 28 – 2025
14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life- Genesis 3:14 KJV
In the Garden of Eden, God did not give the serpent a chance to explain. The serpent, (the Devil, Lucifer) had already fallen and been cursed. This was an additional curse God pronounced. The serpent probably had legs before this curse. He now would crawl on his belly (a snake) and eat dirt all the days of its life, lower than all others in the animal kingdom. All of creation was cursed as a result of Adam and Eve’s eating fruit from the forbidden Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
In the third chapter of Genesis we find one of the most important verses in Scripture.
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. – Genesis 3:15. KJV
According to this verse, there will be enmity between Eve and the serpent who deceived her. The word enmity indicates a blood feud. God promised that eventually the serpent would bruise the heel of the seed of the woman. However, the seed of the woman would also bruise (or crush) the head of the serpent. This would be a fatal blow. Who is the seed of the woman and who is the seed of the serpent?
The ultimate seed of the woman is Jesus Himself. In Genesis 3:15, is the first promise of a Redeemer. It is the beginning of a long line of prophecies concerning the coming Messiah. The Promised One would be from the woman’s seed, an indication of the eventual virgin birth of Christ.
The seed of the serpent would bruise the heel of the seed of the woman. On the cross Satan bruised the heel of Christ, causing His death. Bruising suggests something that was not ultimate or final. Christ died on our behalf being made sin for us- 2 Corinthians 5:21. He bore our judgment upon Calvary’s cross and, in doing so, Satan bruised His heel. Though wounded, the damage done to Jesus was not final. He rose from the dead on the third day.
The phrase seed of the serpent does not mean physical descendants of the Devil, but rather those who are his spiritual descendants.
The seed of the serpent speaks of unredeemed humanity, all those who oppose God.
8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. – 1 John 3:8
Jesus called the religious leaders of his day the children of the Devil John 8:44.
There is the view that the seed of the serpent also refers to the creatures who have fallen like Satan. These include demons and fallen angels.
The seed of the woman will crush the serpent’s head indicating Satan’s ultimate defeat. This has different aspects.
At The Cross
The first stage of the Devil’s defeat was at the cross. It was there where Satan was initially defeated. Jesus said:
31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. John 12:31.
Second Coming
When Christ returns to the earth, He will bind Satan and cast him into the pit.
And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, 3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. Revelation 20:1-3
Lake Of Fire, Satan ultimately will be cast into the lake of fire along with those who followed him.
