Creation of Birds – Day 5 Lesson 15
With God having completed the preparation of earth to be inhabited by living creatures; on the 5th Day of God’s Creation Week, Birds and Sea Creatures were created according to their kind.
Day 1, Earth, Space, Time and Light; Day 2, Atmosphere (Firmament); Day 3, Dry Land and Plants; Day 4, Sun, Moon and Stars; Day 5, Sea and Flying Creatures
Genesis 1:20-23 KJV
20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.
23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
WHAT CAME FIRST THE CHICKEN OR THE EGG? This age-old question really has a simple answer. According to the Creator, the chicken came first. It was on the 5th Day of the Creation Week that God created “every winged bird according to its kind,” (vs 21) The chicken was complete with the DNA to reproduce its kind. Then God “blessed them, saying, be fruitful and multiply” (vs 22) using that DNA. The chicken lays the egg in order to be fruitful and multiply. Question answered.
Birds are mentioned more than 300 times in Scripture and some of Jesus’ most memorable lessons used birds to illustrate them, such as
26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Matthew 6: 26, 30 KJV
The prophet Jeremiah also used the birds to illustrate truths. He said:
7 Yea, the stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the turtle and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the judgment of the LORD. Jeremiah 8:7 KJV
On the fifth day God created all types of birds to fill the skies. When God created birds he created feathers, beaks, wings and claws.
BIRD FUN FACTS
HUMMINGBIRDS are the smallest birds – so tiny that one of their enemies is an insect, the praying mantis.
The hummingbird is the only bird that can fly backwards. It can hover and fly straight up, down or backward.
The hummingbird’s brain, 4.2 percent of its body weight, in proportion to body size, is the largest among birds.
Hummingbirds eat about every ten minutes, slurping down twice their body weight in nectar every day.
The egg of the hummingbird is the world’s smallest bird’s egg.
OSTRICH – The egg is the world’s largest.
The biggest bird in the world is the ostrich-which can grow up to nine feet tall.
Even though it has wings, it can’t fly, but it makes up for the lack of flight by running very fast.
Ostrich’s eyes are larger than their brains.
Ostriches don’t actually put their head in the ground. They lie down and put their head and neck flat on the ground to hide. From a distance all you can see is their body, so it appears as if they have put their head in a hole in the ground.
PENGUINS sleep floating on the ocean. They can jump as high as 6 feet in the air.
Emperor penguins are the largest penguin (115 cm tall). They breed in colonies scattered around the Antarctic continent. Colonies can have as many as 40,000 penguins.
Male emperor penguins carry their egg on their feet and don’t eat for 4 months while they look after the egg.
OTHER: Birds don’t sweat
A bird’s heart beats 400 times per minute while resting and up to 1000 beats per minute while flying.
CHICKENS can’t swallow while they are upside down. It may take longer than two days for a chick to break out of its shell.
SNOWY OWLS can almost turn their head in a complete circle.
ROOSTERS can’t crow if they can’t fully extend their necks.
A LOON can dive more than 76 meters (250 feet) below the water’s surface.
The bones of a PIGEON weigh less than its feathers.
A WOODPECKER can peck twenty times a second.
FLAMINGOS are not naturally pink. They get their color from their food – tiny green algae that turn pink during digestion.
6 Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? 7 But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows. Luke 12:6-7KJV
